MozartRacing captures first place in Grp.N second year in a row at the Pikes Peak Int’l Hillclimb SCCA ProRally event

Thousand Oaks, CA – July 1st, 2003: The 81st running of the Pikes Peak Int’l Hillclimb, Round 4 of the SCCA ProRally Championship, was greeted with perfect race day conditions at the mountain. Beautiful sunshine, completely dry and clean road conditions, set the stage for new records in several divisions of the hillclimb.

MozartRacing’s Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII took driver Wolfgang Hoeck and co-driver Julie Lin to the top of the mountain again in a new record breaking time of 13:23:61, several seconds ahead of last year’s record in Grp.N, also set by Wolfgang. This being MozartRacing’s second SCCA ProRally this year, and a driver and co-driver championship points paying event, it earned the team valuable 10 points. As a result it catapulted both Wolfgang and Julie to 3rd place in the SCCA Grp.N ProRally Championship and started their championship bid for the rest of the season.

“This has been another amazing visit to America’s Mountain Pikes Peak. We are thrilled to again capture top spot at this magnificent event. I was wondering whether we could repeat last year’s performance in time, but to better it and again also be the fastest among the nation’s top contenders, is absolutely terrific.” said Wolfgang, MozartRacing’s driver. “ We did have our share of problems on the way to the top. A mistake in the lower section before the Picnic Grounds packed dirt into our right front wheel. As a result it produced a tremendous wobble in the steering. Driving on the straights felt like holding on to a raging bull. Fortunately it cleared in one of the tight hairpins before getting to the really fast sections with large drop-offs.”

Julie, Wolfgang’s wife and co-driver, was also thrilled to see the finish flag on the peak. “I kept pushing Wolfgang to keep his foot on the pedal. His concentration was affected by the early mistake and by the technical problem. I needed to make him focus and forget about the problems. Whatever I did must have worked well, since we were again fastest. It is really almost unbelievable for us to take first place again. The mountain has been very good to us.”

MozartRacing will now go on to compete again in two weeks time at the Oregon Trail SCCA ProRally, based in Hillsboro, Oregon, Round 5 of the SCCA ProRally Championship. The team is looking to repeat their great starting performance from last year, this having been MozartRacing’s first SCCA ClubRally in 2002.
