Driver - Wolfgang G. Hoeck, Ph.D.
Born in Innsbruck, Austria, Wolfgang learned to drive in the winding roads of the Austrian Alps. Shortly after getting his first car, modifications on the car started to appear, that prepped it for competition in the local Solo2 scene. After a few embarrassing starts and numerous learning experiences, Wolfgang managed to secure a SuperStock title in the early 80's, an early success with minimal financial backing while attending college. After the Solo2 experience, Wolfgang approached "Rallye Racing" in several local events. Due to financial limitations, this approach did not reach very far, but ended with valuable experiences and a few broken cars. The next ten years were spent studying for a "real" education culminating with a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich, Switzerland in 1989. After emigrating to the United States in 1990 and establishing a foothold, Wolfgang entered the California Autocross (Solo2) scene in 1998, driving a 1994 black Mazda RX-7 in Super Stock (SS) and later in A-Street Prepared (ASP) supported by Tri-Point Engineering (http://www.tripointengineering.com/). Wolfgang and his RX-7 soon proved to be a competitive package. Wolfgang went on to win the 1999 Regional Solo2 championship in ASP as well as the overall CalClub CSCC Solo2 championship, followed by a repeat win in 2000, again in ASP. 2001 saw him leading in Street Modified. In 2002 he finished second in the San Diego National Tour and 1st in the Irvine ProSolo events. In 2001 Wolfgang and his then fiancee Julie decided to tackle "Rally" as the next motorsport discipline. They acquired a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII, Grp.N rally prepared with the help of Rhys Millen and Rhys Millen Motorsports (http://www.rmrproducts.com/), Wolfgang and Julie started competing in the Regional and National SCCA ProRally Championship. Several successes in 2002 (climbing to Seed 5, winning Pikes Peak Int'l Hillclimb in Grp.N - http://www.ppihc.com/) encouraged them to continue to compete in the 2003 SCCA ProRally season. They were rewarded with a repeat victory at Pikes Peak in Grp.N, confirming the result from 2001. 2004 culminated in a 1st place Grp.N, second place overall at the Ramada Express Int'l Rally completing a season of good results and valuable driving experiences on the North American Rally circuit. Best Rally results: 1st Grp.N, 2nd place overall Ramada Express Int'l Rally, Laughlin, Nevada, Dec 2004. 1st Grp.N Pikes Peak Int'l Hillclimb 2002 and 2003. Best Solo2 results: 5th place 2000 Solo2 National Championship A Street Prepared (ASP), Topeka, Kansas (best Mazda RX-7 out of 21 cars total). 2 overall regional Solo2 Championships in 1999 and 2000. Several ProSolo victories in ASP. Most satisfying result: 2nd time 1st place at Pikes Peak, repeating the previous year's victory and proving that it was not a fluke. Worst racing experience: Practicing with a friend's BMW 2002 ti rallye car in Austria and placing the car sideways into a tree. Most important person: My wife Julie, who provides the "happy" spirit. Co-Driver - Piers O'Hanlon Piers, a British national who grew up in Cape Town, South Africa, first recalls being fascinated by rallying as a teenager, watching TV footage when the Audi Quattro was at the peak of its success. His first real encounter with rally style events came in 1992 when the Paris-Dakar rally finished in Cape Town. This afforded Piers his first opportunity to see real rally style cars up close and personal. This firmly established Piers' interest in rallying. After finishing university in South Africa, Piers moved to England for five years before immigrating to San Diego, California at the end of 1997. After a number of years establishing himself, Piers then started competing in HPDE track events. These events were a lot of fun and challenging, and were the first real opportunity for Piers to really start to explore the limits of the car in a controlled environment. They also rekindled Piers' dormant interest in rallying. Having acquired a 1984 Audi Open Class Turbo rally car, and having attended the California Rally Series rally school, Piers entered the 2002 Prescott Forest Rally. However, Piers' first rallying attempt wasn't exactly successful, barrel-rolling the car three times at about 60 m.p.h. on stage 3 of his first event. Not easily discouraged and following a more conservative approach during the 2003 season, Piers along with co-driver Neil Smith, drove a steady pace and the team finished almost every event the team entered during the 2003 California Rally Series. This intelligent approach resulted in the team scoring valuable points at nearly every event, and therefore resulted in the team clinching the 2003 California Rally Series Open Class Driver's championship, 2003 CRS Rookie Driver and Co-driver of the year, and 3rd place in the Open Class Driver and Co-driver standings in the Western States Rally Championship (WSRC). In an effort to regroup financially, Piers spent 2004 and 2005 co-driving. During 2004, Piers co-drove for Jon Rood in a Group 2 Ford Festiva. The team finished reliably, scoring consistent points and resulted in Jon and Piers receiving the 2004 Rookie Driver and Co-Driver awards respectively. During 2005, Piers co-drove for young hotshoe driver Alan Musev. After an encouraging start at the Desert Storm Rally, the team synergy improved culminating in an Open Class and Overall win at the 2005 Gorman Rally. Unfortunately, the team had an off while running near the front at the 2005 Laughlin Internation Rally, destroying the car. Best racing result: 2003 CRS Open Class Driver's Championship, 2003 CRS; Rookie Driver of the Year, 2004 CRS Rookie Co-driver of the Year Best Rally result: 2005 Gorman Rally 1st Place (Co-driver) Most satisfying result: Winning the 2003 CRS Open Class Driver's Championship not long after barrel-rolling the rally car at my first event at the end of 2002 Worst racing experience: Barrel-rolling the rally car three times at my first event (one day after buying it !!!) |
